30 Day Shred – Day 1

Oh, 30 Day Shred, you slay me. Literally.

For those of you who don’t know, 30 Day Shred is one of the Biggest Loser’s Jillian Michaels’ workout DVDs. It has three levels, and each workout lasts about 20 minutes. The workout is broken into three sections, which are also broken down into three sections. Lots of threes! You do three minutes of strength, two of cardio and one of abs, then repeat. Sounds minimalist, right? Well, for someone like me, who generally avoids exercise like the plague, even the two minute warmup gets me sweating.

Looking on the bright side, you’re done in twenty minutes, making it easy to fit into any schedule, even that of a student or a busy professional. And I can guarantee you that you will feel like you were at the gym for hours after you’re done. As someone who used to spent countless hours plugging away on the elliptical and Nautilus machines, I feel just as, if not more, accomplished after finishing this workout.

As you can probably gather from the title of the post, I’m going to try to actually do the whole 30 days and all three levels. I started doing it pretty diligently over the summer, but tapered off once the school year started and my workout partner went back to school in New Hampshire. But, my birthday is in exactly three weeks, and I’m feeling the need to look moderately good to make me feel less depressed about getting old (believe me, 22 is OLD). The fact that Halloween is three days after that, and that as a young woman I feel the need to exploit the holiday by dressing provocatively, is also a factor. I’m going to be starting the Special K Challenge on Monday in the hopes of dropping some quick pounds.  I know, not the healthiest thing considering I’ll pretty much only be consuming rice puffs and air. But hopefully the quick jumpstart will get me back on my feet and motivate me to keep with it.

Do any of you have any short-time goals you’re working to achieve?
